1

Treat

Before you start trying to cover up a sunburn, the first thing you want to do is treat the burn. Makeup artist Carmindy suggests taking a couple of aspirins and applying cooling aloe vera gel to the affected areas to help soothe and heal your skin. Next, take a cool shower and apply moisturizer to rehydrate your skin.

2

Moisturize

When you’re trying to cover up a sunburn, it’s of utmost important to use a moisturizer that contains either humectants or lactic acid, says Kirbie Johnson of PopSugar Beauty. Products that contains lactic acid will help with skin cell turnover and humectants attract water and increases flexibility of skin. Try to stay away moisturizers with emollients which can actually irritate skin that’s been sunburned.

3

Sunscreen

Since your skin is sunburned, make sure you apply sunscreen to avoid getting burned even more. Another tip from Kirbie Johnson is to use a physical and not a chemical sunscreen. Look for physical sunscreens that contain zinc oxide or titanium oxide. Some people avoid physical sunscreens because they tend to leave a white cast, but you can easily cover that up with makeup.

4

Cover Redness

If your skin is very red and you want to tone it down a bit, celebrity makeup artist Melissa Walsh suggests using a green or yellow tinted moisturizer like Murad’s Correcting Moisturizer with SPF which hydrates while minimizing redness. This will help ease irritation and flushing and it also contains a slight color correcting tint to conceal redness.

5

Makeup

Makeup artist Bobbi Brown suggests wearing minimal makeup when you have a sunburn to avoid further irritating skin. She suggests using hypoallergenic mineral makeup which will help cover up redness, offer sun protection and give you light and comfortable coverage. If you’re not a fan of mineral makeup, Carmindy suggests using airbrush spray makeup and tapping it in with a non-latex sponge.

Bronzer

It might seem odd to apply more color to your face when you’re trying to downplay it, but it works! Applying bronzer will help tone down redness on your forehead, nose, chin and cheeks as well as balance out your skin tone. Choose a bronzer color that doesn’t contain a lot of pink and apply it gently with a brush to mute redness.

7

Color Correction

You might have some areas that need a little more coverage than others and if so, you’ll want to pick up a corrective yellow concealer in stick form which is thicker in consistency. If you don't use a mineral powder for foundation, you can use a hypoallergenic powder to set your makeup and you’re all done! While you have a sunburn, avoid any type of shimmery makeup which will actually accentuate the burned areas.

I hope these tips to cover up a sunburn are helpful for you. The bronzer thing DOES NOT work. My friend and I tried it and it just turned my face orange

This is going to sounds nuts, but trust me. I do not tan. I get burned so easily. I have found that if you take a scorching hot shower, hotter than you can take it, it flushes the toxins out and the burn will disappear almost instantly and it won't hurt. It sounds counterproductive, but trust me.

This article would have been extremely handy last weekend lol!
