Are you wondering how to be better at applying makeup? They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Well sometimes I behold my beauty with a little eye shadow or some lip stain. I am in no way shape or form a makeup artist. I don’t even go for the glamorous full face of makeup. I do however, enjoy a little pizazz here and there. Here are a few tips to lessen the stress of trying to become your own makeup artist so that you can figure out how to be better at applying makeup.

1

GET off of YOUTUBE!

I can’t tell you how many hours I have spent watching tutorials, still to be no better off than I was before. While the tutorials are great, they’re usually for the people who already have a general idea about makeup in the first place. If you’re anything like me, you’ll be just as lost at the end of the video as you were in the beginning, so if you want to learn how to be better at applying makeup skip the complicated YouTube videos.

2

EYEBROWS MATTER

I used to completely ignore my eyebrows because I felt they didn’t matter. Apparently they do. That doesn’t mean start drawing them on or coloring them in. But at least get them shaped. As much as I despise threading, I love the results it gives. I also use eyebrow gel (gel for eyebrows? Who would’ve thought that’d become a thing?!). One wrong forehead wipe and your perfectly sculpted eyebrows can easily become eyebrow bushes.

3

MORE is NOT ALWAYS BETTER

As a person who is not a makeup artist, trying to correctly correlate eye shadow and lipstick can have you looking like a clown (I’ve seen some “professional” clowns too!). To avoid an anxiety attack while trying to match it all up, just do one or the other. Wearing a bold lip? Keep the eyes simple (eyeliner and mascara are classic). Went all out on your eye shadow? Throw on some lip gloss and keep it pushing. If you happen to do both and you like the results: ROCK IT! It’s your makeup and your face. Forget what anyone else says.

MAKEUP COLORS DON’T HAVE to MATCH YOUR OUTFIT

This one is debatable, depending on the person. I used to be the overly coordinated type where I couldn’t wear red lipstick if I was wearing at least a hint of red. Now reds and pinks are my go-to lip color. Sometimes too much of one color can clash. So go ahead, throw on your favorite white dress with purple lipstick. I’ve done it and rocked it!

5

SUCK YOUR FINGER

After applying lipstick, suck your finger for a quick second to get the excess off your inner lips that always ends up on your teeth. There is nothing worse than cheesing hard, then finding out later that your teeth have had lipstick streaks for who knows how long! Matte finishes have helped in this area, but I tend to find some cute lipsticks that don’t come in a matte finish. You can also apply translucent powder, but it’s a task that needs to be practiced.

I hope these few tips help you get started. I went from taking 30 minutes to apply makeup to 5 minutes and I'm out the door. Play with it a little bit to find what suits you best and stay in your lane. On those rare occasions that you need to be a complete beauty queen, let the professionals handle it. In the meantime, keep it cute ladies!
