7 Big Makeup Trends for Spring 2014 ...

By Kati • Mar 14, 2014

I am totally loving the new makeup trends for spring 2014 – has there ever been a more daring and exotic palette?! The catwalks were covered in striking looks that almost stole the show from the great outfits, and there were some pretty amazing hairstyles to boot, too. Here’s my pick of the big makeup trends for spring 2014, and how you can get them.

1. Pretty in Purple

Pretty in Purple Orchid, lilac and lavender are definitely some of the boldest makeup trends for spring 2014. It’s not just eyeshadow, either – if you’re brave enough, go for a lilac wash through your hair, or a bold purple lipstick! Holly Fulton rocked their show with splashes of pastel purples on the upper eyelids, PPQ clashed their purples with different shades on the eyes and lips, and Marchesa did gothic violet lips that you’ll fall in love with, combined with pastel nailart. Definitely give this a try.

2. Amazing Orange

Amazing Orange When I was 11, I had a favorite lipstick that I’d wear everywhere. It was one of my nan’s matte colours which lasted forever, and I’d have to properly scrub my face to remove it before school. So far, so chic, right? The lipstick of my affections was neon orange, and I wasn’t really doing my fair complexion any favours. It seems I might have been before my time – if you watched the shows this season, you’ll have spotted orange lipstick everywhere. From Rag & Bones matte shades to the silky luxurious look from Creatures of the Wind, an orange lip is definitely the hottest look right now. For best results, team it with bold nails in a different colour – I’m loving yellow and green right now.

3. Geometric Lids

Geometric Lids Eyeliner has gone graphic this season, with bold flicks and angular shapes being seen everywhere. It takes a bit longer to do than your standard liner look, but it gives that retro look a super-sexy update. Anya Hindmarch blended angular liner into a classic smoky eye, making it perfect for evenings, whilst Roksanda models wore angular flicks connected to the socket lines, with no colour. It’s a bold yet classy look for the daytime!

4. Golden Girls

Golden Girls Glowy skin will be huge this year. Models at Dolce & Gabanna were the picture of summer youth this year, wearing a warm apricot glow combined with light eye make up and a pink lip, and I totally love the flowery hairbands they rocked. Michael Kors went for a healthy tanned look, with plenty of highlighter to create killer cheekbones.

"Enhancing your beauty doesn't always mean going for the glossy look. More ladies now see the allure of a shine-free finish. With the right tools and techniques, you can also achieve a flawless, subtle glow. Learn how to master this trend by following these incredible matte makeup tutorials. Enhance your natural complexion without the unnecessary flash."

5. Ice Ice Baby

Ice Ice Baby Not feeling the purple eyes? 2013 saw the start of the blue eye trend, but this year it’ll really come out of it’s shell. Whether you go simple with flicks of blue eyeliner or bold with blocks of eye-catching shadow, there’s something for every style and taste. Giorgio Armani created a mermaid-inspired aquatic look using washes of barely-there turquoise shadow, while Marc by Marc Jacobs opted for an electric blue shade, keeping the bottom lid natural. The Marc Jacobs sister show opted for royal blue eyeliner on it’s own, for a subtle yet bold statement. I’m totally loving this look!

6. False Fashion

False Fashion I’ve never really got the hang of false eyelashes – I’m always amazed when I see girls who can apply them in the blink of an eye! I tend to end up with my fingers stuck to something, and a spidery eyelash situation. This year might be the year I master it, though – false lashes were a definite trend at the shows. It’s not just your top lashes that are getting some love, either. Think doe-eyed 60’s makeup, with feathery lashes on both your top and bottom lids. It’s a super sex kitten type look, and it was all over LFW!

7. Schoolboy Brows

Schoolboy Brows I’ve saved one of the most controversial make up trends for spring 2014 for last – schoolboy brows. The arch was making no sign of a comeback at this year’s shows, with blunt, boy-ish brows being everywhere, instead. Louis Vuitton opted for bold black brows regardless of the models’ colourings, while Calvin Klein went for natural colours but with more of a bushy finish. Erdem went for a full feral look, for minimum maintenance. Want the look? Measure it out with a brow professional, first. This is a bold look, so you need to get it right!

So, what do you think of these make up trends for spring 2014? Will you be grabbing an orange lippie, or super-sizing your brows?! I can’t wait to give some of these a try. Infact, I’m already rocking a bold blue eyeshadow today, and I might even hunt out blue masacara. Retro. Let me know what you think of the looks in the comments!

Dam, I take pride in how thick my eyebrows are and I think they add to my uniqueness. I love them thick and without and arch for many reasons, first they make me feel younger because they give me am innocent kinda of face, also they are natural not heavily waxed and they add an exotic kinda of look. And at the end honestly it's a matter of taste. Thanks for the article!

I could randomly approach 100 guys on the street, show them a picture of schoolboy eyebrows and ask if they find them attractive. I guarantee not ONE of those fellas will answer yes. They look horrendous to me and I'm a girl!

Loving this article, exactly the sort of thing I'd love to see more of! :) And, personally, I like the strong brow trend, even when it goes all the way over into schoolboy brows. It's different and it catches your attention, and it's not like you can't wax them into a different shape later. I'm enjoying the contrast between strong, even bushy brows and bold lip colours.
