1. Find a Primer You Love
The purpose of a primer is to help your makeup go on more smoothly and stay in place. However, all primers are not created equal. You may have to do a bit of experimenting to find a primer you love. Primers come in all price ranges and brands so you may want to start with a brand you’ve had success with in the past. One other good thing about primer is that a little bit goes a long way.
2. Use Blotting Cloths
Have you ever had this scenario happen to you? You look in the mirror and notice your face is oily and your makeup is smudging everywhere. Your first instinct may be to reach for your powder, but there’s a better solution since powder can leave your face looking cakey and dry. Blotting cloths are the best choice for this scenario. They remove the oil, sweat and grime without adding to the smudging problem like powder does.

3. Go for Waterproof Eyeliner and Mascara
Eye makeup is what tends to smudge the most for me. It’s incredibly frustrating! Who wants to go around looking for mirrors all day to make sure their eye makeup isn’t smudging down their face? Not this girl! The best solution that I’ve found is to use waterproof eyeliner and mascara.
4. Dab Instead of Rubbing when You Cry
I’m a crier. I cry at sappy movies, weddings, emotional moments and on hormonal days. If you’re a crier like me then you need this little trick. Dab under your eyes instead of rubbing when you cry. Rubbing tends to smear your makeup even more.
5. Blot Your Lipstick
Does your lipstick tend to smudge? Maybe you’ve noticed it bleeds out of your natural lip line as your day goes by? Blotting it can help prevent that from happening. You don’t have to blot it all off; just a small blot can work wonders at stopping smudging. Lip liner is also helpful at keeping it in place.

6. Switch Your Foundation
If you feel like your whole face tends to smudge and smear as the day goes on rather than just having a few problem areas, then you may be wearing the wrong type of foundation. Try switching to a matte formula. You could also choose a foundation that has words on it like “shine control.” You definitely want to stay away from foundations that offer extra moisture. You need a foundation with less moisture if your makeup is always smudging.
7. Add in a Mattifying Product
If switching your foundation doesn’t give you the results you were hoping for, then you may need to go a step further. You may need to add in a product that’s specifically for mattifying your skin. I recently tried out Covergirl TruMagic Skin Perfector Mattifier and was pleased with the results. In addition to preventing smudging, it really minimizes pores. It can be used as a prep or a finishing product.
