7 Tips for Making Your Makeup Look Symmetrical ...

By Holly

We're attracted to symmetry, which is why it's so important for us to make both sides of our faces match when we're applying our makeup. However, that can be hard to do, especially when we want to try out fads like winged eyeliner. If you've been having trouble in front of the mirror, here are a few tips for making your face look more symmetrical when applying makeup:

1. Use Tools, like Tape, for Winged Eyeliner

Winged eyeliner is the number one culprit when it comes to ruining the symmetry of your makeup. It's hard enough to make one eye perfect, and it's almost impossible to make both eyes perfect. That's why it can help to use tools like tape to make sure that both sides are symmetrical. Just place a piece on the corners of your eyes and use it as a guide for your liner.

  • Oh, I've totally been there! You can use eyeliner and eyeshadow to create the illusion of symmetry. Playing with shapes and contouring can balance out any differences. It's like magic!

  • Ah, the age-old question! Start by identifying the areas you want to balance out. Contouring is your best friend here. For example, if one cheekbone is higher, use bronzer and highlighter to even things out.

  • Absolutely, you can totally fake symmetry with lipstick! Use a lip liner to slightly overdraw and define your lip shape, matching both sides. Nobody will ever know!

  • Yes! Use an eyebrow pencil to fill in and shape them to match more closely. You might also try a brow stencil to keep things even. It's like filling in the blanks!

  • You’d be surprised how much of a difference contouring and highlighting can make! It's all about creating shadows and light to trick the eye. Focus on areas that need balancing, and blend, blend, blend!

2. Do One Eye, then the Other

If you're having trouble matching one eye to the other, it can help to do one eye completely before you start on the other one. That way, you'll know what the other eye should look like by the end of your makeup routine.

3. Use Lipstick to Alter Your Cupid's Bow

If your cupid's bow (the curve on the top part of your lip) isn't symmetrical, you can create the illusion that it is. Grab your lipstick and draw an outline where you would like your cupid's bow to be. Then fill in that area along with your actual lips. As long as you don't apply as much makeup as Miranda Sings, no one should be able to tell the difference.

4. Get Rid of Eye Puffiness

If only one of your eyes is puffy or has a dark circle beneath it, that side of your face will look heavier than the other. However, you can fix it by applying cucumber or potato slices over your eyes to cure the issue. You could also use extra concealer in the problem area in order to keep your face looking symmetrical.

Mastering the art of contouring is key to enhancing your facial symmetry. Use bronzer to shade areas like the hollows of your cheeks, and highlighter on your cheekbones to bring them forward. Don't forget to blend well to avoid harsh lines for a more natural-looking definition. Take a contour stick or powder that's a few shades darker than your skin tone and trace the perimeter of your face, along your nose, and below the chin. Patience and practice ensure that your makeup not only looks symmetrical but also accentuates your best features effortlessly.

7. Use Bangs to Hide One Side of Your Face

If you can't get your eye makeup even, then you can hide your mistakes with side bangs. Your hair will hide the edges of your eyes, so you'll only have to worry about creating a great wing on one side of your face. The other side will be hidden from view, so you can leave it as a mess without having to worry about what others think.

Makeup can hide your flaws, accentuate your good features, and even make you look like a completely different person. Anything is possible when you have a brush in your hands. What tricks do you have for making your face look symmetrical while applying makeup in the morning?

Don't use tape unless it's MEDICAL tape safe for use on skin. And make sure to stick and rip it off the back of your hand first. Using strong tape will cause premature wrinkles and can tear the skin.

Eyeliner on the upper eyelid is the trickiest one for me.

@Madmaddz Thats hilarious

Really with #7? That's not a great tip/idea. Practice doing something new when you don't have to go out.

Great post @Holly!

Using your bangs isn't such a good idea, what if the wind blew me and someone saw your face underneath, man that would be embarrassing 😮
