1

Consider Your Skin Color

When it comes to choosing the right shade of red lipstick, it’s important to think about the color of your skin first and foremost. Most experts say that anyone can wear a true red color, but if you can’t find one, there are some other things to consider. If you have pale skin, look for a red with pink or blue undertones. If you have olive or darker skin, an orange-red will probably look better on you.

2

Look at the Brightness

When you’re considering several shades of red, consider how bright each one is. The brighter ones are naturally going to pop more on paler skin and may look less intense on darker skin. If there is a tester lipstick available, swipe some on your inner wrist and you’ll have a pretty good idea how bright it will look on your lips. You want something that isn’t too over the top, but instead will blend with your make-up and look natural.

3

Think about Hair Color

You wouldn’t think about your hair color having anything to do with your red lipstick. While advice varies a bit, many make-up experts recommend that blondes wear bright red lipstick that has a slight matte look to it. For those with darker hair, deeper reds look great. Try a burgundy or wine colored shade. However, if you have dark hair, but light skin, choose something a bit understated or your look will be too severe. Red heads can’t go wrong with a great coral shade of red.

4

The Event

Sure, you can easily pull off a bright red lipstick for dinner on a Friday night, but it might not be the right shade for every occasion. Sometimes, it’s better to keep things a bit more subtle and save the bright colors for a special event. You might want to keep things a bit toned down for work, for example.

5

Your Eye Make-up

Most make-up experts I gleaned information from caution women to keep their eye make-up toned down if they are going with bright red lips. You want to look natural and beautiful, but too much make-up can quickly make you look way over the top. So if you opt for red lipstick, wear a light neutral on your eye and finish the look with a of couple coats of black mascara.

What You’re Wearing

Red is pretty classic and pretty much looks great with everything. But I would definitely make sure I assess my whole look in the mirror before heading out the door. You might find that you don’t like the way red looks with certain outfits.

Do You Love It?

Obviously, the best way to determine what shade of red is right for you is how you feel about it. If you slick on a color and can’t stop looking at it, chances are you’ve found the color for you. Whenever possible, try out colors before making a choice so you know you’re getting the one you love the best.

Do you wear red lipstick? It always gets smeared all over my kids when I wear it, but there was a time when I did. Do you have any other tips for finding the right color?
